The North East as a region has a wealth of energy sources, a strong supply chain network and the expertise to be able to harness and export these resources. The question is, how as a region will we utilise the opportunities available and secure a more balanced energy future?
Chris Huhne, former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, will join our panel of acknowledged regional industry experts including Neil Etherington, Able Uk, Jim Cardwell, Northern Powergrid and James Ramsbotham, North East Chamber of Commerce to discuss the key issues facing the North East:
- How will we balance the energy resources available?
- Is shale gas viable and what are the opportunities?
- What are the issues facing the import of energy in light of international developments?
- With the strength of expertise in the region across the energy mix, how do we make the most of export potential?

Chris Huhne was Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change in the coalition government from 2010 to 2012, and was responsible for the policy behind two key bills: the energy bill of 2011 and the electricity market reform to spur low carbon investment.
In Opposition before 2010, Chris was the shadow Environment secretary responsible for the first comprehensive plan for decarbonisation – Zero Carbon Britain.
Prior to elected office, Chris was group managing director of Fitch, the ratings agency, and an award-winning journalist on The Economist, Guardian and Independent. He has been on the board of the Consumers’ Association, the council of the Royal Economic Society, and a visiting fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford. Chris graduated with a BA (First Class) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Magdalen College, Oxford University in 1975.
