Importing

Many businesses engage in import activity even though you may not necessarily think of yourself as an importer.

It is likely that all of those businesses are aware that the location of their supplier can raise specific legal issues. Our experienced commercial team is able to help guide businesses through these issues and provide the reassurance that businesses need to maximise their opportunities in overseas markets.

You will also need assistance on any UK rules relating to imports, including restrictions on certain products or countries, taxation and duties. We can assist you in ensuring that you comply with the relevant requirements.

When importing we would normally advise that you seek to ensure English law applies to the contract, and that the English courts will hear any litigation arising out of the contract. However you will remain subject to some mandatory laws of the state from which you are buying (for example export rules, competition law, rules on taxation). In order to fully understand your legal obligations you may wish to instruct a lawyer qualified in the country where your supplier resides. We can manage this process for you using our network of contacts at overseas law firms, ensuring that you get the advice you need with the minimum of hassle.
