We have experience across a wide range of sectors and they are seen as being very important in terms of developing our business and delivering a competitive edge to our clients. Our people have come from leading law firms and have great knowledge in their chosen sectors whether it is acting for clients in the energy, manufacturing, healthcare, sports, charities and social enterprise, education, technology, media and telecommunications sectors or for entrepreneurs.

Sport

There is a great variety of work in the sports sector, but it is a unique area and few lawyers have had over 20 years’ experience and are totally immersed in the industry in the way that Robin Winskell is.

A significant amount of the work that arises is dispute resolution, whether it is acting for players or agents, clubs and players. On the non-contentious side there are contracts, image rights agreements and endorsement agreements.

Robin Winskell, not only acts for a number of high profile premier league footballers, but more recently has attracted several professional golfers to the firm, including two former US Masters winners.

Energy

Rising energy costs, security of supply, renewable energy sources, increased regulation and emerging technologies have all given energy generation, supply and efficiency a high profile.

Our team of energy lawyers understands that this fast evolving sector is under intense competitive pressure and as a result, companies are seeking ever more innovative and practical advice from their lawyers.

The team, led by partner James Bryce, has been successful working with companies across the full remit: power generators, renewables, offshore, decommissioning, supply chain and emerging technologies.

Our energy lawyers have worked on some of the largest cross border schemes as well as UK schemes, across wind power, solar, roof top and ground based developments and have also worked on large scale M&A fund raising deals.

We regularly work with clients in the subsea supply chain because as a region we have world-class expertise and it’s very exciting to be part of that.

Earlier this year the energy team helped Utilitywise plc with its first European acquisition in the Czech Republic which provides Utilitywise with a footprint from which to expand their services in Europe.

Some other examples of our experience in this sector:

Able UK on a range of matters including decommissioning projects, power off-take arrangements and the assembly of the Marine Energy Park on the Humber

UK Sustainable Energy on the development and sale of the 8MW Foxburrow Farm and the 3MW Priory Farm ground based solar generation sites

Zero Carbon Futures on the establishment of networks of quick chargers to support next generation electric vehicle charging

Shepherd Offshore on the development of both the Offshore Technology Park and Neptune Energy Park which will include the Neptune National Centre for Subsea and Offshore Engineering, the first of its kind in the UK, bringing together industry and academia to create a world class engineering research facility

The Energy Debate

sectors-one

“The North East as a region has a wealth of energy sources, is a net energy exporter, has a strong supply chain network and the expertise to be able to harness and export these resources. Earlier this year, Square One Law and Brewin Dolphin jointly organised a highly successful panel discussion, in association with NECC” NOF Energy and The Journal to discuss “How will the region secure a more balanced energy future?”

We brought together a panel of experts from the energy sector and our guest speaker was Chris Huhne, former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. The event attracted over 100 delegates and a wide range of topics were discussed by head of energy, James Bryce along with fellow panellists Chris Huhne; Neil Etherington, Able UK; Jim Cardwell, Northern Powergrid; Dermot Roddy, Five-Quarter; James Ramsbotham, North East Chamber of Commerce; George Rafferty, NOF Energy and Elaine Coverley – Head of Equity Research, Brewin Dolphin
